Apple Pages- Explained!

Apple Pages is not just a traditional word-processing program. The application is available on iTunes store for free. With the help of the software, it is feasible for anyone to create essays, write books, and letters similar to that of Microsoft Word or other open source platforms. However, in reality, the strength of the application lies in producing best-appearing pages that the user can save in an electronic format or take a printout.

Utilization of the application depends upon the requirement of the user. They have the option to choose Microsoft Office, open source platforms such as LibreOffice, or the expensive and high-end application such as Adobe InDesign. Nonetheless, for a majority of Mac users, Apple Pages is the best application or word processor available out there that effortlessly carries out all the actions required for the user. It even provides the opportunity to share the Pages using the online storage application – iCloud.

About the Design

As everyone expects, Apple shipped all the three applications with stunning design templates. Pages arrive with a gallery where the user has the option to utilize any of the templates to create certificates, postcards, flyers, pamphlets, newsletters, brochures, reports, and letters. The concentration that Apple had on the design skill extends to the most profound level, which makes the word processor has some of the best elegant styles available for the user in the form of charts, tables, shapes, and text.

On the disadvantage side, it is impossible to change the template after creating a document. Unlike Microsoft Office or any other open source program, Apple does not provide the opportunity for the user to modify template but only offered the access to change text styles.

About Document creation

With the help of the application, it is possible for the user to create a full-featured page layout. However, Apple provided the opportunity to create it in only in two modes – the traditional word processing mode and “page layout” mode. Using these layouts, an individual gets the chance to insert pictures and other design elements apart from the text. However, the handling of the text in this action is entirely different.

In the traditional word processing mode, as in the case with the rest of the applications, after typing the first line, the words flow to the next page and continues in the same fashion. When we speak about page layout mode, it is possible that there may be one or more text boxes available in the design. However, text contained within a box has limitation and does not continue to the next page. The only advantage that the user receives, in this case, is that it is possible to drag back and forth the text box within the document. For example, it is possible for the user to drag a text box created in page 2 and place it on page 4.

About the Interface

Like other document creators, Pages has a well-planned layout that provides the user to have quick access to all the features available in the software. Optional sidebars supplied to both right and left give access to numerous controls. The left side provides options such as comments and thumbnails, while the right side acts as an inspector panel where the user can control the document layout and formatting.

The inspector panel is a regular element and displays different features according to the page element selected. The only advantage that the user can see in this arena is the roomy appearance of the creation. It is easy to navigate and understand about the options available in the inspector panel.

About Word processing

The application functions efficiently and performance equally in comparison to other word processors out there on the market. The best feature among all is the uncluttered interface. And sometimes, it is impossible for the user to notice essential options until the user wishes to see them in the panel. For illustration, if the user wants to see footnote, they can choose the “Type” option in the footnote panel. The action will change the footnote to endnotes. On the downside, it is not possible to have both a footnote and an endnote in the same layout.

The Find-Replace feature provides options to look out for words or the chance to match up all lowercase words. However, it is incapable of finding specific formats such as underlining or italics and page breaks. On the brighter side, Pages has the ability to create envelopes from the available templates. The absence of the envelope command is what makes it disappointing. In Microsoft Word, it is possible for the user to create and print an envelope and save it as a single letter document.

If you are capable and proficient in using AppleScript language, then you can have the opportunity to utilize mass mailings option. As the mail merge option does not function, it provides support page link that the user can link to a third party website along with instructions. In office-centric format, it is vital that the software recognizes every form and processes the formatting intact. Pages performs the action to the point and does an impressive job like the rest of the applications. Surprisingly, Pages is incapable of exporting a document into HTML format. However, the user has the option to export to PDF, plain text, and ePUB formats.

About the Price

If you are still using an old Mac, you can get Pages for $19.99 from the App Store. However, if you are buying a new Mac, you will probably be getting it for free. Either way, the application is inexpensive and gives you complete control over several word processing tasks that you would assume from a word processing program. The major weakness about the app is its inefficiency in saving a document in Word format as a default. If it fulfills your requirement, and if you do not mind in taking an advanced step in exporting a material that you need to share, then Pages is the best option that you have.
